Earth Day at WES

We are doing a few activities as a school to help support Earth Day.  We started the week off by doing some mindful writing on ways we can help the Earth.  On Thursday please send gloves and a plastic bag with your child for our school wide garbage pick up.

Here are the ways we are celebrating Earth day at WES:

April 24: “Mindful Monday” Students will reflect on ways they can help the earth.

April 25: “Turn it Off Tuesday” Power down throughout the school.  To conserve energy, classrooms will turn off some lights and other power-consuming devices.

April 26: “Waste-free Wednesday” Students are encouraged to bring a garbage free lunch to school.
To be “waste-free”, students can bring reusable food and drink containers, not disposable ones.

April 27: “Thankful Thursday” Classes will participate in a school-wide garbage pick-up.  As a gesture of appreciation for our earth, students will pick up garbage in their assigned area around the school.

April 28: “For our Future Friday” Students will attend an assembly celebrating Earth Day.

Students will require gloves to pick up the garbage.
Please send a plastic bag and gloves with your child.

The planet thanks you for your support in taking care of our world!

Straw Towers Project

The students had a great time building their straw towers.  They used their knowledge from the unit to create their towers.  The towers needed to be 1 meter tall, be able to stay up for one day and show evidence of strength and stability. Below are pictures of building process and the finished products.

April Events in 3JB!

Well Easter Break is coming up quickly.  We can’t believe it is already the month of April.  We will be finishing up units and beginning new ones this month.  We are looking forward to the events ahead that will be happening in our classroom.

Our project with the Community gardens and our plants has been very successful.  All of our pepper plants germinated, sprouted and are now growing.  When the days become warmer they will be taken to the community garden to be planted.  We will go on a field trip in June to see the garden.  The students are very excited!

After the Easter break we will be working on Division strategies in math.  The students have really enjoyed this unit.  We will also be beginning our plants unit in Science and ELA.  During our writer’s workshop time we have been learning about different style of poems and have had a chance to be creative poets.  We will be choosing a couple of our favorites to put into our portfolios for you to read.

We are looking forward to a dry playground and warmer weather.  Happy spring everyone!

Our Plants

The students bought home Coleus plants yesterday.  They were from the Gardenscape activities that we could not attend.  Below is some information about how to care for your plant.  Happy Growing!

Growing Coleus Plants

Coleus is probably one of the easiest plants to grow. In fact, the plants root so easily that you can even start cuttings in a glass of water. They can also be propagated by seed indoors about 8-10 weeks prior to your last expected spring frost.

Coleus can be added to beds and borders for interest or grown in containers. They need fertile, well-draining soil and usually perform best in areas with partial shade, though many varieties can also tolerate sun.

When growing coleus, keep in mind that these beauties can grow rapidly. Plant coleus close together as bedding plants or tuck them into baskets and containers for a fast growing and spectacular addition.

Care for Coleus Plant

Caring for coleus is just as easy. They need to be kept moist, especially newly planted coleus. Container plants also require more frequent watering than those grown in the garden. Although it’s not required, the plants can be given a boost of half-strength liquid fertilizer during their active growth in spring and summer.

Their spiked flowers usually appear in summer; however, these can be removed if desired. You can also pinch the shoots of young coleus plants to produce bushier growth.

Another factor in coleus care is overwintering, as these plants, which are considered tender annuals, are highly susceptible to cold temperatures. Therefore, they must either be dug up, potted, and brought indoors for overwintering [3] or grown through cuttings to establish additional plants.

New Math Unit!

Multiplication and Division Unit

We have started our new math unit on multiplication and division.  The students were very excited to start this unit.  The focus on this unit is on developing an understanding of the processes of multiplication and division in order to develop strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers up to 5×5.  The students will use counters, number lines, and arrays to develop their understanding.

In this unit your child will:

  • Model multiplication and division up to 5×5
  • Find strategies to multiply and divide up to 5×5
  • Pose and solve story problems involving multiplication and division

We use multiplication and division in many day-to0day situations.  Here are some suggestions for activities you can do at home:

  • Look to things that come in groups of 2,3,4,and 5.  Create problems.  For example:  Bikes have 2 tires  How many tires are on 4 bikes?
  • Use a deck of playing cards, using the 1’s to 5’s.  Shuffle the cards.  Flip the first card.  This represents the number of groups.  Flip the second card.  This represents the number of objects in each group.  Have your child draw a picture to match the cards and write a multiplication and division sentence to match the picture.  Continue until all the cards are used up.

Field Trip

We attempted to head to Saskatoon for our field trip, only to have to turn around and head back to school because of some very icy highways!   The kids were disappointed but instead we had a  movie afternoon in the classroom 🙂

We will figure out other possibilities for a field trip in the future.
